Facebook Adds Opt In to Beacon

Date November 29, 2007

After much controversy over Facebook’s Beacon and its privacy issues, the FB crew modified Beacon and turned it into an option for users to ‘opt-in’ to.

I’ll be very curious to see how many users actually do this.  Usually, people ‘opt-out’ so this will be a test to see how loyal FB users are and how much they want to share their purchase history with their online buddies.

Personally, I don’t think most people care what I am buying and I don’t really care too much what my friends are buying or what movie they are renting, etc.

I am however still a fan of Facebook Ads and think that Beacon is not really necessary, however since it is an option, it’s good to know that FB acknowledged what its users wanted and made a much needed change fairly quickly.
