Mixxing Things Up

There’s a fairly new social site called Mixx.com that I really like.  It’s very similar to Digg, but friendlier and easier to use.  Many Digg users have joined Mixx so it’s nice to see some familiar faces over there.  If you don’t have a profile yet on Mixx, I’d suggest you consider getting one.  I think this site has some potential.

For one thing, it is really quite fast as far as page loading goes. Voting for stories is a breeze, there is no double clicking involved, you just vote the way Digg used to be.

Finding your friends stories is easy, you just click on the Your MixxFriends link and all the posts are displayed quickly.

When you submit a story to Mixx it’s super easy to share with friends and Mixx also offers groups that can be set up.  You have to be invited to join Groups, but once you’re in a group you get an email when a story is submitted.  If you aren’t into emails, no problem, there’s also an option to display all recent group activity.  You can also email stories to friends.  Keep in mind that if you do, they will see your email address, so if you’re using an anonymous profile, you need to know your email does get displayed.

The thing I like most about Mixx is that unlike Digg, Mixx tells you who voted down your story along with who voted it up. 

There’s nothing wrong with voting down stories and like StumbleUpon, Mixx doesn’t hide the details from you.  So if you are voting people down a lot, you’re at least doing it publicly instead of hiding behind the bury button on Digg.

Seeing who has befriended you is also simple, unlike Digg where you have to scroll through pages and pages of friends, Mixx shows them all to you on one page.  It tells you how much they’ve submitted and what their Karma points are.  This is great because you can decide right away if you want to friend someone that has 500 submits right off the bat.  On Digg when someone adds you, you have to go to their profile before you know if they will be high maintenance or not.  Mixx makes it easier to see that upfront.

Mixx also uses Karma points, but unlike Reddit, the points seem pretty easy to get and you get a lot at a time, not 1 point at a time like I get on Reddit.   

The traffic from Mixx is obviously no where near Digg, but with time it could get there and since it is so easy to use, why not get in now rather than later.
