Using Propeller

Date November 27, 2007

If you play around with social media sites, I would highly advise that you get involved in the Propeller community.  Like Mixx and reddit, Propeller is easy to use and provides you with easy ways to follow your friends’ stories and easy ways to vote.

Once logged into your Propeller profile you can quickly see your friends’ participation with an overview, recent activity and their submitted stories.  From that screen voting is a one click step.

Unlike Digg’s friends’ submit page, where you are forced to open the story before you can vote, Propeller keeps things simple and gives you the ability to vote right from the friends’ submissions list.

Some other things I like about Propeller is that they allow messaging between friends and you can easily see when a friend is online once you are logged in.

Propeller also displays what stories you have voted or sunk.  So like Mixx and Sphinn (feature coming soon) if you’re going to be a sinker, anyone that wants to can check.

Propeller lists your friends in a nice row on the right side of your profile and will do the same for any user profile you click on.  They have also simplified the process of adding friends.  This too is a one click process.  There’s a small (add) button next to the user name and all you have to do is click it.

You can do this from the same page without leaving and having to go back.  Once you select add, the user will instantly show up on your friends list when you return to your profile.

If you decide to become more active in Propeller, I also recommend the Propeller add-on available through Firefox.  The way that works is that every time one of your friends has activity, a small pop-up will appear on the bottom right side of your monitor.  It’s a good reminder to check Propeller and you don’t have to acknowledge it right away.

When you’re ready to check out your friends activity you just click on the icon that is displayed in your tool bar and voila…
